Native vs ParcelSlip
What Shopify gives you, and where ParcelSlip picks up
Shopify can show customers a VAT invoice for orders placed at its checkout. Refunds, numbering and sales outside that checkout are where merchants end up with spreadsheets.
Shopify on its own
- VAT invoice on the order status page for checkout orders
- No separate numbered credit note document for a refund
- No invoice sequence you control across sales channels
With ParcelSlip
- Numbered credit note for a refund, linked to the original invoice
- Your own prefix and gap-free sequence for invoices and credit notes
- Works from any order Shopify lists, whichever channel it came from
- Pro-forma invoices for draft orders and a monthly CSV for your accountant
What goes on them
What a VAT invoice and a credit note usually show
A VAT invoice normally carries a unique invoice number, the date, your VAT number and the VAT shown separately. A credit note carries its own number and date and refers to the invoice it corrects.
For the rules that apply to you, read the GOV.UK guidance on VAT invoices (page checked 18 October 2026). ParcelSlip prints these fields from the order and the tax Shopify calculated: sequential number, issue date and tax point, your legal name, address and VAT number, the customer's details, VAT rate and amount per line, VAT totals per rate, and reverse-charge wording where it applies.
How it works
From refund to credit note in three steps
Install and add your details
ParcelSlip runs inside your Shopify admin. Enter your legal name, address, VAT number and invoice prefixes once.
Issue the invoice
Open an order and issue the numbered invoice. Print it or save it as a PDF from your browser.
Refund, then issue the credit note
Open the refunded order and issue a credit note. It takes the next number and points back to the original invoice.

FAQ
Questions merchants ask
Does Shopify create VAT invoices?
Shopify can show a VAT invoice to customers on the order status page for orders placed at its checkout. It does not issue a separate numbered credit note document or a numbering sequence you control across sales channels. ParcelSlip fills those gaps and works alongside Shopify's setting.
How does a credit note work in ParcelSlip?
Open the refunded order in your Shopify admin and issue a credit note. It gets the next number in your credit-note sequence, refers back to the original invoice and credits the refunded items and shipping with VAT per rate. Orders you cancel can get one automatically; you can switch that off in settings.
Is there a limit on how many invoices I can issue?
No. ParcelSlip is $9 per 30 days with a 7-day free trial, billed through Shopify, and does not cap invoices or credit notes. The monthly CSV register covers up to 250 orders per month.
Can I use my own invoice numbers?
Yes. Set your own prefixes for invoices and credit notes. Numbers run in sequence per shop, independent of Shopify order numbers, and each number is allocated once and kept.
Does it handle B2B orders and exports?
For B2B orders you can read or enter the customer VAT number and the invoice carries your reverse-charge or zero-rated wording where it applies. VAT numbers get a format check only, they are not verified with VIES or HMRC. Exports can get a customs invoice using the HS code, origin and weight from your Shopify product data.
Is this tax advice?
No. ParcelSlip helps you produce invoices and credit notes with the fields UK and EU VAT rules usually call for, using the tax Shopify calculated for each order. It does not decide your VAT treatment or guarantee compliance. Check your obligations with an accountant or your tax authority.
